The Benefits of Massage for Stress Relief

It’s very comforting to know that there is a service in this world designed  specifically to reduce stress and fatigue and that provides relief, relaxation and rejuvenation for one’s body, mind, soul and spirit. That something is, of course, massage. For massage can do all of those things and more. That massage therapy has leaped in popularity as a treatment and a career over the last three decades is proof of its magical effects. 

 

For me the benefits of massage are plenty and almost endless. To explain the benefits and what is sometimes inexplicable we have to look into what massage is.

 

Massage is an art, meditation, relationship, ethos, practice, exercise in letting go and feeling. It works on a myriad of levels – mental, spiritual, metaphysical, human and beyond. It works on your thoughts. your digestion, your mood, your circulation and more. That said the healing properties of massage are abundant, meaning massage is a sort of “gift that keeps on giving,” a tool for peace and peace of mind. It’s no wonder it’s grown in popularity. One of my favorite results of a massage is the voice change – the way the voice gets deeper, more sonorous the way it’s supposed to be naturally. 

 

As such, massage is one of the most natural ways to manage stress.

 

Stress is defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Most people are stressed out.

 

 

It is the action of rubbing the body through a series of different strokes, effleurages, petrissages and percussion that gets rid of the harmful toxins that can cause the biggest stressors – headaches, back pain, neck pain. Without massage stress can buildup and cause one to fall apart or have breakdowns, collisions and arguments.

Massage Techniques

Distressing people is a big job. You have to theorize what methods to use. Where to start what strokes to use; deep or light, slow or fast etc. Here are a list of modalities and how you can expect to be distressed:

 

Swedish – oil, lighter, longer strokes. Swedish is still the most common of massages using light pressure to make you relax.

Deep Swedish – long and shorter strokes that allow the deeper work to relax you.

Shiatsu – depressing trigger points all over the body with depth can have more stress relief banished from the body.

Hot Stone Therapy – placing and sliding of hot stones on the body. So much to say about the melting away and combatting of stress. 

 

 

A Final Note

 

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy are elements for helping the mind escape its worry cage and to promote peace and calm. Essential oils can alter mood, aid circulation and help you breathe better which in turn will help you relax more. They can be found at your local whole foods grocery or online.

Mostly all massage helps with stress. But sometimes a bad massage can create it. Here are a few tips to use to find out who the imposters are.

  1. Use your intuition.

  2. Massage therapists are born not made.

  3. Massage therapy is a serious calling that’s often not taken seriously.
