5 Reasons To Eat At Home

There was an article written recently in Time magazine by Bestselling food writer Mark Bittman, he wrote about the importance of eating at home.  In this first episode of Tafiq TV I'm going share with you why both Mark and I  believe that eating at home is good for you, it’s good for your family and it’s far easier than you think.

 

In today’s fast paced world we consume over 30% of our daily calories away from home. These less-than-wholesome calories are not only accumulating around our waists, but they are also draining our bank accounts. 

 

Is it really that inconvenient to cook in our own kitchens, in the comfort of our own homes. Are we really that busy?  Evidence shows that we are paying big time for the so-called convenience of outside food. 

 

Obesity related diseases are higher than ever in history and they continue to rise each year. Not to mention the number of men and women who are just plain unhappy with how their bodies look and feel. Cooking at home is definitely the first step to attaining a healthier body, increasing energy, improving mental clarity and losing unwanted body fat.

 

So today I want to share the top 5 reasons that you should starting cooking and eating at home… 

 

Reason #1: It’s Good For You

Overly processed foods are harmful to our health, and that’s exactly where most people get the bulk of their calories. Even with restaurant food that contains fresh produce, chances are high that the produce is not organic, or local or non-GMO. Most of us are eating less than half of the recommended amount of fiber, fruit and vegetables per day. By eating at home you are in complete control and can make sure that you are  getting the essential nutrients that you need. 

 

Simple meals made at home with fresh produce and organic lean protein are nutritionally superior to over-flavored, over-processed restaurant food. Not to mention the high calorie beverages, appetizers, sides and desserts that so often accompany a restaurant meal. When you eat at home you are able to take in more nutrient-dense calories that are higher in fiber and better for your waistline and your over-all health.

 

Reason #2: It’s Easier Than You Think

Eating out so often has conditioned our concept of a meal to be one with complicated flavors and other components. This misconception has made us fear the kitchen. You may be afraid that your food won't taste good or that you aren't a good cook. But I urge you to reconsider. If you can read you can follow a recipe and easily make a delicious and nutritious meal. And the more often you do it, the better you'll be. Practice makes perfect. 

 

And beside, meals made at home don't need to taste like the ones you order in restaurants. In fact, simple is better when it comes to home cooking. Plan your entire meal around a couple of pieces of fresh produce and a wholesome, lean protein. No need for complicated homemade sauces or sides – thats exactly where the harmful calories are hidden anyway.

You can even make it bit romantic by cooking  with your significant other or even include the kids to make it a family affair. 

 

Reason #3: It Costs Less Money

Fresh, simple ingredients do not cost much. Especially when compared to the cost of prepared meals. In Bittman’s article…his advice on ingredient shopping is to, “Buy what you can afford, and cook it yourself. Brown rice, beans, veggies and whole grain bread – think about it …there are few things you'll find cheaper than that.” 

 

Reason #4: It's Preventative Medicine 

In the US the annual health care expenses related to obesity is $150 billion, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Worldwide this number is over $1 trillion annually. These numbers are staggering, and sobering when you think of all the individual lives that are being negatively impacted by illnesses related to poor food choices.  Many of the top causes of poor health and even death are related to these choices and the negative effects they have on the body.

 

Rather than waiting for you and your family members to experience the health risks related to poor food choices, start your own mission to cook simple meals at home and redirect your future. Remember the words of Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” 

 

Reason #5 : It Reduces Body Fat

Eating at home is by far one of the best ways to reduce your body fat. Bittman also states in the article that meals eaten at home contain an average of 200 calories less than meals eaten out. Let me tell you, a reduction in 200 calories per meal will quickly translate into fat loss!
